Over the past twelve months, the pandemic has tremendous impact on the shipping industry. By working closely together, our office staff and seafarers have overcome many of the challenges. Just when we thought we have managed to control the Delta variant, we now face the new Omicron variant. Looking on the brighter side, it seems that Omicron is more infectious but less severe.

Social media is quick to report news and information. Increasingly, we demand more transparency about the spread of virus. In providing accurate information and care, we engage our seafarers through pre-joining briefing and frequent communication while they serve on board the vessels.

Due to China’s Zero Covid policy, limited foreign crew are allowed into China. This is good to protect us but making it very difficult for the Shipowners and Managers to deliver their new vessels. As a result, in addition to a normal crew contract, we have undertaken many short delivery contracts. Many of the short contracts are from new international Shipowners with no Chinese crew experience. It is a new experience for them and we are happy that our Chinese crew meet their expectations. We hope that they will continue to employ our Chinese crew for the longer term.

Ports are also giving vaccination boosters to crew. There will be lesser restrictions for crew travel. The time will come when Chinese crew are too costly and may be priced out of the market. Shipowners will have no choice but to employ more crew from other nationalities to keep the cost down. In this regard, we hope our Chinese crew wages can stabilize and a shift in their mindset to stay competitive.

In the early years, he sailed as a Chief Engineer and then came ashore to work in the shipyards. Following, he joined a Tanker company as Technical Superintendent and eventually became Managing Director. Through part time study, he is graduated with Master of Business Administration and Master of Finance. His interest is in reading, learning and active sports.
